Condemnation of Okuama Military Attack: Urgent Call for Justice and Preventive Measures

In a recent and deeply troubling incident, the Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, and the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Muhammed Bello Matawalle, MON, have unequivocally condemned the heinous attack on military personnel during a peacekeeping mission by the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Okuama Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. The Ministers emphasized that those responsible for this brutal act must be brought to justice promptly.

The tragic event unfolded on Thursday, March 14, 2024, when Nigerian troops, responding to a crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State, were ambushed. This cowardly attack resulted in the grievous loss of the Commanding Officer of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, Lt. Col. A.H. Ali, two Majors, a Captain, 12 soldiers, and an innocent civilian. The Honourable Ministers expressed their profound sorrow and highlighted the immense sacrifices made by these brave servicemen in defense of the nation. “This tragic incident underscores the immense sacrifices made by our servicemen and women in the defence of our nation. Their unwavering dedication and courage in the face of danger exemplify the highest ideals of patriotism and duty,” the Ministers stated.

In response to this appalling incident, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Chief of Defence Staff to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the perpetrators face the full force of the law. The President’s directive underscores the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining national security and justice.

The Ministers reaffirmed their dedication to safeguarding the security and well-being of all Nigerians, declaring that any threat to the nation’s sovereignty and stability will not be tolerated. They assured the Nigerian public that comprehensive efforts will be made to bring those responsible to justice and to prevent such occurrences in the future. “We affirm our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the security and well-being of all Nigerians and will not tolerate any threat to our nation’s sovereignty and stability. Additionally, we assure the Nigerian people that every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators to justice, and we remain resolute in our pursuit of peace and tranquillity across the nation in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The Honourable Ministers reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to maintain and secure the nation, emphasizing their unshakeable support for the armed forces. The Defence Headquarters and the Chief of Defence Staff have been granted full authority by President Tinubu to bring to justice anyone found responsible for this egregious crime.
