NAF Plans to Establish Permanent Base in Abia
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to establish a permanent base in Abia State. This announcement came after the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, met with Governor Alex Otti of Abia State at his residence in Mvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area (LGA) earlier today, June 7, 2024. According to Air Marshal Abubakar, the presence of the NAF in Abia State will enhance airspace security and provide critical support in emergency response, disaster management, and community development initiatives. He also emphasized NAF’s commitment to extending its air power capabilities to address national security needs, particularly in Abia State and the Southeast Region.
Reflecting on the tragic incident in May 2024 that resulted in the deaths of soldiers and disruption of livelihoods at Obikabia Junction in Obingwa LGA, Air Marshal Abubakar assured that those responsible would soon be brought to justice.
The CAS commended Governor Otti for his dedication to public service and his efforts to improve Abia State. “We admire your people-oriented governance and your judicious management of public resources to enhance the living standards of Abians. Your approach promotes sustainable growth, development, and prosperity,” said Air Marshal Abubakar.
Governor Otti expressed his gratitude for the planned establishment of the NAF Base, noting its timeliness following the Federal Government’s approval of an airstrip construction in the state. He mentioned that the designated land for the airstrip is ample enough to accommodate the NAF Base, which his administration is eager to allocate. To facilitate the Base’s immediate operationalization within the next two months, the Governor promised to provide a temporary site in Umuahia, along with residential accommodations, mobility, and other necessary resources. He emphasized that the NAF presence would strengthen the efforts of other security agencies in the state.
Addressing the May 2024 incident, Governor Otti announced an increase in the bounty for information leading to the capture of those responsible from N25 million to N30 million, thanks to an additional N5 million donation from a prominent Abia native residing in the United States. He called on all citizens to cooperate with security agencies to eliminate criminal elements and restore peace to the state.
