Gen. Olukolade Advocates Stronger Support for Families of Fallen Soldiers and Military Veterans
Retired Major General Chris Olukolade, former Spokesperson of the Defence Headquarters, has called for a stronger and more intentional commitment to improving the welfare of families of fallen soldiers and military veterans in Nigeria.
In a recent interview with TVC, aired during the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and monitored by PRNigeria, Gen. Olukolade highlighted the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) in defending the nation’s sovereignty and preserving its core values. He acknowledged that while the government has taken steps to support the families left behind, more needs to be done to create a lasting and meaningful impact.
“The government has made progress in addressing these concerns over time, but there’s still a considerable gap. The sacrifices of our fallen heroes must be fully recognized through stronger support for their families,” Olukolade urged.
He also turned attention to military veterans, describing them as “living legends” who face significant post-service challenges. Olukolade called on authorities to listen to and address the pressing issues confronting these veterans.
In addition, he appealed to the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Headquarters to prioritize the enforcement of policies aimed at enhancing the welfare of both active and retired military personnel.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day, celebrated every January 15, serves as a solemn occasion to honor the memory of soldiers who gave their lives in service and to appreciate veterans who continue to embody the spirit of national duty.
